Pilsner beer, a historical beer style.

Pilsner is considered the world’s first pale lager and was first produced in 1842 by Pilsner Urquell Brewery. Radically different from the usual dark ales brewed at the time, this new beer style got an immediate success and is still the world’s most popular style today.

In  Plzeň where the Pilsner was invented, it wasn’t surprising to see beer running down the streets. In 1838, the brewers of the town, rolled 36 barrels of ale into the street, opened them and spilled the beer into the main square, the beer ended up in the nearby Radbuza River. This batch ran into contamination issues by wild yeasts or bacteria, and the brewers decided that the beer became undrinkable.

That was it, the brewers teamed up together and decided this would never happen again. They hired an architect, Martin Stelzer and they sent him off to study breweries in Munich and other parts of Bavaria. During his study, Martin Stelzer met Josef Groll, a Bavarian brewer. Martin Stelzer came back with plans to build the best brewery and with Josef Groll to teach them the German lagering method.

With the combination of Plzeň's remarkably soft water, local Saaz noble hops, low-protein Moravian barley malt prepared by indirectly heated kilning, and Bavarian-style lagering Josef Groll and the Pilsner Urquell Brewery produced a clear, golden beer known as Pilsner style now.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF LONGSLICE X OLD TORONTO'S METROPOLITAN PILSNER.

Metropolitan Pilsner a more modern international-style take on the pilsner style. It's filtered to be super brite, and pours a beautiful straw colour. In true pilsner style the beer has a soft bready palate. The addition of late-addition whirlpool hops gives it a distinctive flavour with subtle notes of straw.

You can find Saaz, Herkules, and Tettnang hops in our Metropolitan Pilsner. As the tradition wants this beer is clear, crisp with a soft bready palate and subtle notes of straw.
